The banquette

I even love the name of this piece. Banquette. There was a huge unwanted space in our kitchen that would be perfect for a….Banquette!

This obviously was the before shot. But after we redid the countertops and cabinets we knew the next project was this corner space. So off my hard working hubby goes to grab supplies. Total price of wood was about $100.

You’ll notice I also started painting the grout white. I painted the area where the banquette would be so it would have a seamless look when the banquette was finished. Because the black grout had to go.
The base is now finished. All that’s left to add is trim.
Now time to paint!
It’s all painted and ready for finishing touches…

And here it comes, the final reveal….

😌 Oh how I love how it turned out! The table is from Facebook Marketplace for free and the chairs I found curbside while driving to work ….Score! The pillows are from At Home, including the flower vase and sign. And the table runner is a gift from my mama. 🥰 The walls are Benjamin Moore Dove Wing and the trim is Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige.

Painted Cabinets

Now that the countertops have been refreshed, it was time to update the look of the cabinets as well. I kept going back and forth about adding trim to the doors for that farmhouse look, but in the end decided to leave them as is (for now). I do appreciate how easy they are to clean!

And I have a little secret with these cabinets. There was a ghastly hole, shelf, or light bulb holder above the microwave. At least that’s what we used it for when we were unpacking 🤷🏼‍♀️

Let’s just cover that, shall we?
Much better!
Here’s a before picture. Notice the light bulbs in the shelf 😄

You’ll notice we also changed out the cabinet hardware and I temporarily put up a faux tile backsplash. The color for the bottom cabinets is Sherwin Williams Green Earth. And the above cabinets are Benjamin Moore Dove Wing. The kitchen walls are also BM Dove Wing and the kitchen trim is SW Accessible Beige.

Kitchen Countertops Part 2

With the island top finished it’s time to move onto the rest of the countertops. Same steps, including the red stain with a gray stain overlapping 🫠

Since the original countertop is Formica, we decided to change things up a little and forego the plywood base and attach the wood strips directly to the existing countertop using a nail gun
This was so hard to watch the red stain purposefully being applied 🫣
Ahhh 😮‍💨 all better!

Next step, painting the cabinets! This will all turn out great in the end! 🤞🏻

Kitchen Countertops Part 1

Faux granite 80’s countertops needed to go.

What better countertops to add to our farmhouse than wood countertops. Decided to use click lock flooring for the counters. Butcher block was out of our price range. The island was also way too narrow. We added another 2 feet to the back side, using plywood as the base, for extra seating.

We filled the gaps with wood filler and sanded sanded sanded.

I learned a valuable lesson with this project…. I had a honey color stain in mind for these countertops. So I grabbed minwax gunstock stain. The color on the can looked about right. Always perform a test on a scrap piece of wood before staining the whole project!

😳 I did not make any color enhancements on this photo. It. Is. Red. Sanding it down to the bare wood wasn’t an option. Think think think. Let’s see what gray stain over the top of it does. So I grabbed minwax weathered gray.
😮‍💨 ok. This I can handle. Not the honey color I was envisioning. But it turns out I like this even better! Added 3 coats of poly and voila!
Happy dance 💃🏼 🕺🏽

We’re far from finished but it’s a good start 🌟 Total cost of wood/stain/glue for the island top was about $250. Sink was purchased from Lowe’s for $150. The faucet was purchased on Amazon. It’s a Delta faucet that brand new costs about $300, but because we got it from the used section was only $90! 😃

Hallway

We decided the first project to tackle was the first thing people see when they walk in, the hallway. The old flooring was cracked and worn laminate flooring. We found click lock flooring on Facebook marketplace for $150. Fortunately I have my own handy man, my husband, who can turn my visions into reality. 😍

The old flooring
My husband’s handy work with the new flooring. I love how it turned out! 🥰
End result!❤️ I decided to go with a jute hallway runner. With a dog and kids it holds up to everything they can throw at it!
